The Thing (Prequel) Review

The Thing is a hard movie for me to review, because the original is one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm not saying that the new version is terrible, it is far from that. It just does not have the same tension filled experience that the other had and the acting was considerably better in the original. It is kind of like comparing Jaws and Jaws II. Jaws is an amazing movie and while Jaws II is a great movie on its own, it just does not have the effectiveness of the original. The aspect that really took The Thing 2011 down a couple of notches was the CGI graphics. The original is hailed for its effects and I believe it has some of best effects of any movie ever made. The creativeness and workmanship that went into the effects of the original outmatch just about any movie other than Alien in my mind. The CGI in the 2011 version is sometimes really effective but it really takes away from the movie sometimes because the creature in the movie is supposed to be this organism that is supposed to be incredibly terrifying. Screw zombies and vampires, The Thing is the most frightening movie monster out there. It puts everything else to shame and shits on the pods from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Everything in the new version is solid, I just can't get past the effects. It really hurts the movie and they should have just hired the old effects team or a team that could put together a team that could do great practical effects. I hope that this is the last Thing movie because it was really not necessary at all. One of the things that made the original so effective was that you knew as much as the characters did and you were trying to figure out their situation along with them. Overall I would recommend seeing The Thing 2011 because it is a solid sci-fi horror movie. If you have seen the original and are looking for more of the same movie, lower your expectations.
